An easy way to make yourself feel bad

Handbook to a Happier LifeI am always amazed at how many things we humans do to undermine our happiness. It’s as though we go out of our way to feel badly. If you are one of those people who are just way too happy and want a simple way to make yourself feel really lousy, here is one technique that’s guarantee to do it.

Come up with a dream or a desire you’ll never be able to achieve.

I realize that this is a tongue and cheek artcle, but people do it all the time. My wife, Georgia, has a friend whose lifelong dream is to live in California, so far so good. However, she is also unwilling to move from New York where she now lives. While there’s nothing in particular keeping her in NYC, she chooses to spend her life lamenting about how she would really like to live in California. Obviously not enough to actually do something about it however.

The result, life long frustration, and disappointment, something which is sure to take away her joy.

Why on earth would anyone want to hold on to a dream they know that they will not or cannot achieve? To me this is insane!

Either, as with the case of Georgia’s friend, go for your dream or, if that is not possible, change your dream to something that you can achieve.

This is something that we have to deal with in a relationship with another person as well. It’s important to decide together what your ideal life and lifestyle would be. If possible, do it early in your relationship to avoid problems or resentments later on.

By keeping your dreams and goals flexible, you are better able to adapt to whatever life situation you find yourself in and are less likely to be unhappy and frustrated wanting a life you cannot have.

Of course, if feeling miserable is your goal, by all means, go for it.
