How to end the recession

In an earlier article, I wrote about, as Franklin Delano Roosevelt essentially said, “we have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

Below is the rest of that statement which warrants further reflection.

“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.” FDR  - you can read the entire speech here

Think about the last part – “Which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

This is, in my opinion, one of the big contributors to the current economic difficulty we’re experiencing. At a time when, in order to restart our economy, we need to be moving fearlessly forward, too many people are pulling back or, worse yet, retreating into their cocoons.

Companies, instead of stepping out boldly into the marketplace, are “hunkering down” and hoping the storm blows over before they go out of business.

Individuals, worried about their security, are cutting back on all but essential spending.

Banks, once burned, are reluctant to lend again, thereby cutting off the credit markets and shooting themselves in the foot. .

All of these, while understandable, are compounding the problem and standing in the way of a faster recovery.

Holding this problem in place are the steady stream of negative messages from the media. It’s not my intention to make them the fall guy but, let’s face it, all we hear on the evening news or read in our daily newspapers are more and more stories about how bad things are.

It’s interesting to note that one of the things Roosevelt did to help turn the situation around in the 1930’s was to create a “Mastermind” alliance to start crafting more positive messages and stories of successes rather than failures.

He assembled both houses of Congress, positive thinkers like Napoleon Hill and Norman Vincent Peale, the leading newspaper publishers and radio station owners of the day, and church leaders of every denomination.

Their efforts, combined with the efforts of ordinary citizens, produced a wave of positivity that was powerful enough to start turning the tides of the great depression.

It’s an interesting aside that Hill did not write his, now famous, book, Think and Grow Rich, with the intention of publishing it. He wrote it to keep himself in a positive frame of mind in order to get through these difficult times.

The time has come, once again, for those of us who believe in the power of the mind to start following Hill’s model and begin to spread a positive message of hope and recovery.

You can help

Email, call or write your congressional representatives and ask that they and, yes, President Obama, model the strategy developed by Hill and FDR.

Write emails and letters to the editors of your local newspapers, asking them to start “singing a different song.”

Please share this message with your friends as well as on social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Linkedin, and so on.

Why is Suzy Orman Trying to Put Starbucks Out of Business?

While coffee giant, Starbucks, struggles to keep it’s stores open, providing decent jobs and benefits for even part time employees, author Suzy Orman is telling people the way to wealth is to “make your own coffee at home and save the money.”

Sure, saving money is always a good idea and it’s prudent for people to look for ways to cut back on expenses, however, Orman is taking it to the extreme. Cut your own hair, make your own coffee and brown bag your lunch? What’s next, eating dog food?

Much of Orman’s advice is sound and no doubt she’s well intentioned but there are other ways to change one’s financial situation.

In my newest book, Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck, I suggested a change in your attitude and beliefs about how much money you deserve and desire as the place to begin. I then suggest several part time ventures almost anyone, with a little ambition and drive can implement, without giving up their job or risking their savings, to supplement their income.

I am one of the authors who teach making more money as the solution to financial shortage. My philosophy is shared by many of my colleagues. People like Jack Canfield, Joe Vitale, Mark Victor Hansen, T. Harv Ecker, Bob Proctor, Loral Langemeier, and others have all written about using attraction principles as the way out of struggle.

In the end, it’s a personal choice. You can decide to make more money or drink cheap coffee.  For me, and those in my camp, foregoing Starbucks is not an option.

You can refuse to be part of the recession

With everything going on right now, as I see it, you have two choices. You can either be part of the herd of people who are living in more and more fear each day, which can only make things worse for them or you can decide to do something about your personal situation.

Make the distinction between what you can change and what you cannot.

As a place to start, I want to make sure you know about some of the simple, low cost resources that you can use to spark your creativity and get ideas to implement an  additional income stream.

Don’t just sit there watching the news, lamenting about how “bad things are.”

Refuse to be a victim. Take decisive action and you will immediately feel better, plus you will be increasing your income. Instead of worrying about where you can cut expenses, ask yourself what you can do to increase your household income.

A lot of my newsletter readers have used the 20 Ways to Make $100 per Day Online ebook to help them add income to their household. If you missed the earlier information about this simple, yet powerful product, take a look here.

Here’s another great resource from my “she-ro,” Carrie Wilkerson, the Barefoot Executive.  Learn to put your skills, free time and mindset to work for you. Grab a copy of “44 Unusual Ways” Moms are earning money in their spare time – and you can too.

And of course, in case you have not read it, my own book, “Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck” is guaranteed to empower you to change your financial situation forever. Take a look here.

Above all, refuse to participate in conversations about how “bad things are.” Yes, as I’ve written before, “ignore reality.”

Start looking for what is working in your life, however small it may seem. Since like attracts like, focus only on what you want and what is going right in your life and business.

Make this a family activity. Each night, make a list of  5 to 10 things you appreciate from your day. Doing this will quickly shift your energy to a point of attracting what you want and, before too long, you will start to see results. Don’t take my word for it. Do it and see for yourself.

Please share this with your friends and family and post your thoughts and comments below.

Life Lessons We Can Learn From the Lone Cypress

One of my favorite places in the United States and somewhere my wife Georgia and I have spent a lot of time is the Monterey Peninsula, in California. I love the ocean views, mild climate, and the overall natural beauty of that part of the California coast. Along the coastline, on the scenic “17 Mile Drive,” one of the special sites on the tour, is the Lone Cypress tree.

This amazing tree sits all by itself out on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The little tree has anything but a peaceful existence, weathering the high winds and storms, but it survives nonetheless.

The way it not only survives, but thrives, and the point of this story, is that the Cypress tree has learned to adapt to its environment and remain flexible, learning to accommodate the high winds rather than try to fight the elements. In the case of the Cypress, as with people, flexibility is key. Conditions change and people, or trees, who attempt to resist the change, will be broken.

This idea is especially important to grasp with everything that is going on in the world’s economy. People who continue to cling to old ideas, or outdated jobs, will experience difficulty, while those who can learn to “go with the flow” will thrive.

If you have been working in a job or industry that is experiencing a down turn, why cling to it? Just because “I have always been a (fill in your job)” does not mean I have to continue doing so.

Instead, why not look into one of the emerging industries that will be creating huge demands for skilled workers in the future. Solar energy and fiber optic technology are just two that come to mind. The “green movement,” an essential shift in the way we do things, is here to stay. We have been trashing Mother Earth for far too long and fortunately, we’re finally realizing it. This effort to reverse the ecological destruction is creating a swarm of green businesses and ecological products with an accompanying opportunity.

Maybe you are in your own business and are being affected by the current conditions, most are. Don’t be afraid to make some changes even if it means going in an entirely new direction. If you are in a service business and things are a little slow, ask yourself, what new or additional services could I offer that there is a demand for?

The key is flexibility, learn to go with the forces rather than stand ridged opposing them. Pay attention to what you are noticing. Remembering that we attract what we focus on, it’s important to keep our point of attraction on what is working. As I wrote in an earlier article, whenever there is this much chaos and churn, there is huge opportunity. With a new president who is committed to job creation, there is even more opportunity.

For example, a decade ago I was working as a freelance instructor at a computer school in Philadelphia. I taught Desktop Publishing, Office Systems, and the Internet.

One day as I arrived early with my coffee and bagel, I went into the conference room that I was using to have my breakfast and work on my book. On that particular day, when I arrived, the conference room had been turned into a classroom.

Later I learned that in response to a growing need to re-train displaced city workers, the company was building classrooms as fast as they could. I was to spend the next several months teaching classes to former city workers who were learning new job skills. I predict that we will be seeing a lot more of this, in different industries, in the days ahead.

With so many people being laid off, there is an opportunity for coaches who can specialize in transition and careering coaching. For that matter, coaching schools will be seeing an increase in students as many of these downsized corporate employees decide to move to the coaching profession.

Builders and contractors who are astute enough to become knowledgeable about energy incentives can create new business by educating homeowners about what’s available to them.

For the individual, or business who chooses to stay flexible and look where the economy is going, rather than lament about where it has been, there is always an opportunity. Remember the champion hockey player, Wayne Gretzky, who said, “Most people skate to where the puck is. I skate to where it’s going.”

The tides rise and fall, the winds blow and subside, the storms both natural and economic come and go, but the flexible among us always thrive. When you are feeling uncertain or worried, remember the little Cypress tree flourishing amongst the elements.

We have nothing to fear, but fear itself!

The quotation above, part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1933 inaugural address responding to the conditions of the day, is said to have been written by Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich.” Incidentally, Hill was part of President Roosevelt’s “National Recovery Administration,” formed to help inspire public confidence during the great depression. Perhaps our new Administration could learn from this and institute a similar plan.

To say people are feeling fearful right now is a huge understatement. Freaked out would be more accurate and no wonder. All we get from the news media is gloom and doom. We’re bombarded daily with news of layoffs, some from even the most stable companies, mortgage foreclosures, banking failures and more.

The important thing to realize is that, unless you are one of those people directly affected by a layoff or a foreclosure, you do not have to identify with the problem.

The old adage about fear being “false evidence appearing real” is important to remember. If you are not directly affected by what is happening, and most of us are not, it really is false evidence. I’ll agree that we are all affected by this economy to some extent, but we can choose how we react to it. We can always choose how we react in any situation.

A Course, in Miracles teaches that nothing has any meaning other than that which we give it.

Regardless of what is happening there are always people who are succeeding. Instead of being part of the group that is constantly talking about problems, a total waste of time, you can choose to look for solutions.

What is essential, however, regardless of what is happening in your life, is that you don’t get into a state of being fearful.

The very energy of fear, the negative of it, will cut off your access to possible solutions. Science teaches us that your very ability to tap into resourceful brain states is limited when you are in a fearful state.

How to reduce or eliminate fear

One of the keys to lessening any fears you may have is to focus on the present moment. In the present everything is, most likely, just fine. Only when we project some imagined disaster in the future, do we even experience feelings of fear.

We taunt ourselves with “what if” statements like “What if I lose my job?” “What if I get sick and can’t work?” and on and on until we’re gripped by the fear of what “could” happen. Wake up! It’s not happening now. You’re okay and chances are you’ll continue to be okay.

One simple way to bring your attention into the present moment is to practice a simple centering exercise. This can be done whenever you’re feeling anxious and need not take more than a minute or two.

Do not do this, or any mind quieting exercise while driving. Do not strain and if you become dizzy, stop immediately. If you have respiratory problems, check with your medical practitioner before attempting this.

Sit quietly, feet planted firmly on the floor. Take a few deep breadths, breathing in slowly through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Sit for moment, observing your breadth flowing in and out of your body. During this time, let go of everything you’re concerned with and simply focus on your breathing. You will begin to feel relaxed almost immediately.

Watch where you’re putting your attention

Change your focus away from problems by making a list of everything that is working in your life. Doing this will shift your vibrational energy to what is going right which will, in turn, attract more of the same.

Another variation on this is to make a gratitude or appreciation list of everything you appreciate in your life. Focusing on this will also shift your energy away from problems toward solutions.

If possible maintain a support group. This could be made up of family and friends, colleagues, your coach, or even a formalized group. To learn more about the types of groups meeting near you, check out www.Meetup.com

We will get through these challenging times, we always do. Keep looking for the good, what’s working, what you are grateful for, and the opportunities that surround you and you will come through this unscathed.
