I am always amazed at how many things we humans do to undermine our happiness. It’s as though we go out of our way to feel badly. If you are one of those people who are just way too happy and want a simple way to make yourself feel really lousy, here is one technique that’s guarantee to do it.
Come up with a dream or a desire you’ll never be able to achieve.
I realize that this is a tongue and cheek artcle, but people do it all the time. My wife, Georgia, has a friend whose lifelong dream is to live in California, so far so good. However, she is also unwilling to move from New York where she now lives. While there’s nothing in particular keeping her in NYC, she chooses to spend her life lamenting about how she would really like to live in California. Obviously not enough to actually do something about it however.
The result, life long frustration, and disappointment, something which is sure to take away her joy.
Why on earth would anyone want to hold on to a dream they know that they will not or cannot achieve? To me this is insane!
Either, as with the case of Georgia’s friend, go for your dream or, if that is not possible, change your dream to something that you can achieve.
This is something that we have to deal with in a relationship with another person as well. It’s important to decide together what your ideal life and lifestyle would be. If possible, do it early in your relationship to avoid problems or resentments later on.
By keeping your dreams and goals flexible, you are better able to adapt to whatever life situation you find yourself in and are less likely to be unhappy and frustrated wanting a life you cannot have.
Of course, if feeling miserable is your goal, by all means, go for it.
It seems amazing to me that, in all this outrage about Newsweek, Oprah Winfrey, Suzanne Somers and big Pharma, everyone seems to be missing the fact that the information Ms. Somers is writing and speaking about is not coming from her, it’s being reported to her by some of the leading, most highly accredited medical doctors in the US.
There is a growing movement in America to help people become healthy. This is a long, long way from treating disease, which is what we’ve been doing with the traditional medical approach to health.
The reason the pharmaceutical industry opposes natural cures is quite simple, they can’t patent it and, therefore, there’s no money in it.
Why does Newsweek care? A single issue of the magazine contains $1.4 to $2.3 million in pharma ads (based on advertising rate card prices).
Even if you have not written your goals down, and I certainly hope you have, or even if you think that you don’t have any goals (you do), the more clarity you have with regard to what you want, the more likely it is you will have it.
The young woman in my workshop said, “I want a new house!” So far so good. “What type of house do you want? Where do you want to live?” I asked.
“I don’t care. I just want my own house.” What do you think the chances are that she will manifest it? If you said “slim,” you are right. I can imagine God asking her the same question to which she replies the way she did to me. I can also imagine God saying, “When you figure out what you want, let me know and I will deliver it to you.” And walking away in frustration.
If your child came to you and asked for a toy, you would probably ask, “What kind?” And then do your best to give it to her or him. We are God’s children and He wants to give us what we ask for, but … we have to ask!
The clearer you are about what you want, the more descriptive and detailed your desire, the easier it will be to manifest it. In my seminars, I teach people that if they want a car, for example, to get clear as to the type, model, color, and as much detail as possible.
To engage other senses, especially for material things like cars, I suggest getting a photo of the item and putting it where it will be seen. Better yet, go to a dealership and ask a salesperson to take a picture of you sitting in the car of your dreams. This is the same as making a “dream board” or “treasure map,” something I have been using and teaching for years.
If it’s a special relationship that you want to attract, make a list of the chief characteristics and traits of your ideal partner. In your business, you can use this same idea and list the characteristics of your perfect customer. If you want to dive deeper into this from a business application, I recommend the book Attracting Perfect Customers by Stacey Hall and Jan Brogniez.
Once you have become clear as to exactly what you want, you move on to the “asking part.” The Bible says “ask and it is given.” Notice that it does not say “beg or whine.”
An ideal way to ask is by using affirmative prayer, a technique I learned from Catherine Ponder, one of the great teachers of our time. She suggest giving thanks that it is already complete by using an affirmative prayer such as “I give thanks that my financial income now increases mightily, through the direct action of God’s rich good .”
By invoking affirmative prayer, you are giving thanks and affirming your belief that what you asked for is in fact given unto you.
The simple process is:
- Identify what you want in as much detail as possible.
- Be thankful for having received it.
-Remain open to allowing it to come to you.
- Act on whatever inspiration you receive
Notice that nowhere do I suggest that you have to figure out how. That’s not your job. Your job is to identify it and let it in. Most people ask, beg actually, from a position of lack. This violates the law of attraction. You cannot attract something by focusing on the absence of it. This is a subtle but powerful distinction.
