How Long Do You Expect to Live?

Now there is an interesting question. How long do you think you will live? How long do you plan to live? Or more importantly, how long do you intend to live? Barring unforeseen circumstances, your attitude, your beliefs, and your intentions have as much to do with the length of your life as do any other factors, including genetics.

Comedians George Burns and Jack Benny joked throughout their lives about living to over 100, at a time when the average life expectancy was more like 65. I find it fascinating that both lived pass their 100th birthday and for the most part in reasonably good health. Elvis Presley talked about, and feared, throughout his short life, dying at the same age as his mother. Sure enough, his affirmations were successful; he died at the same age. Michael Jackson essentially did the same thing. He often spoke about his fear of dying like Elvis, and sure enough he did.

My friend Vic Johnson was planning his 100th birthday party when he turned 50. I told him that since I am a couple of years older than he is, I’d probably be the oldest person there.

Will I live to see my chosen age of 106? I don’t really know. It’s not that important but – and this is important – if I am going to affirm when my life ends, why wouldn’t I make it when I want? I’ve been affirming being a healthy, active 106 year old for over 30 years. I tell people that I want to know what it feels like to have a triple digit age. Of course, I am more interested in how well I am living then just counting time.

Here is a key: your words have power. Remember your sub-conscious mind does not know the difference between what is real and what is vividly imagined and affirmed.

What are you telling yourself about aging? Do you believe as my friend Ed that “we’ll all wind up in a nursing home sooner or later?” Or are you creating, for yourself, an image as a happy, healthy, active, and vibrant older adult? It’s your choice but know that the messages you feed into your mind over and over will determine what happens. As Earl Nightingale taught the world in his classic audio program the Strangest Secret “we become what we think about.”
