Choose carefully who you listen to

Have you ever noticed that there is no shortage of people willing to give you advice, whether or not you asked for it? I’ve developed some simple rules about from whom I will accept advice and suggestions.

Board of Directors MeeetingI do not ask for heath advice from people who are sick, I do not ask for financial advice from people who are broke and I do not ask for business advice from people who are not in their own business.

Over the years I’ve watched hundreds of people go into a business venture and excitedly tell their family and friends about their new enterprise. Big mistake! How many of your friends and relatives own their own business? Probably few or none. While they may be well intentioned and have your best interests at heart, their lack of knowledge and their own fears can sabotage your new venture.

If you want advice or input about a business, find someone who is successfully running their own business and ask them. Ask several people so you can obtain an objective view. When your choosing mentors or role models, be sure to seek out those people who have been there. Chose people who have “walked the walk” and have succeeded in doing what you want to do. This applies as much to health, finance, education, relationships and pretty much any area of your life.

If you want to be fit and healthy, do not seek advice from someone who is overweight, a smoker, and sick all the time. Find a fit and healthy person and model them. I know this sounds overly simple and obvious, but it never ceases to amaze me how many people are listening to and even following the advice of people who do not know what they are talking about.

They are, sadly, listening to the person who is stuck in a dead-end job telling them why a business idea will not work. They are listening to an overweight, sick person who is telling them that taking vitamins is a waste of money and they are listening to the person who is living paycheck to paycheck telling them how to become wealthy.

To ensure your success, make sure your role models are demonstrating in their own lives, the qualities you seek to develop.

Why is Suzy Orman Trying to Put Starbucks Out of Business?

While coffee giant, Starbucks, struggles to keep it’s stores open, providing decent jobs and benefits for even part time employees, author Suzy Orman is telling people the way to wealth is to “make your own coffee at home and save the money.”

Sure, saving money is always a good idea and it’s prudent for people to look for ways to cut back on expenses, however, Orman is taking it to the extreme. Cut your own hair, make your own coffee and brown bag your lunch? What’s next, eating dog food?

Much of Orman’s advice is sound and no doubt she’s well intentioned but there are other ways to change one’s financial situation.

In my newest book, Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck, I suggested a change in your attitude and beliefs about how much money you deserve and desire as the place to begin. I then suggest several part time ventures almost anyone, with a little ambition and drive can implement, without giving up their job or risking their savings, to supplement their income.

I am one of the authors who teach making more money as the solution to financial shortage. My philosophy is shared by many of my colleagues. People like Jack Canfield, Joe Vitale, Mark Victor Hansen, T. Harv Ecker, Bob Proctor, Loral Langemeier, and others have all written about using attraction principles as the way out of struggle.

In the end, it’s a personal choice. You can decide to make more money or drink cheap coffee.  For me, and those in my camp, foregoing Starbucks is not an option.

You can refuse to be part of the recession

With everything going on right now, as I see it, you have two choices. You can either be part of the herd of people who are living in more and more fear each day, which can only make things worse for them or you can decide to do something about your personal situation.

Make the distinction between what you can change and what you cannot.

As a place to start, I want to make sure you know about some of the simple, low cost resources that you can use to spark your creativity and get ideas to implement an  additional income stream.

Don’t just sit there watching the news, lamenting about how “bad things are.”

Refuse to be a victim. Take decisive action and you will immediately feel better, plus you will be increasing your income. Instead of worrying about where you can cut expenses, ask yourself what you can do to increase your household income.

A lot of my newsletter readers have used the 20 Ways to Make $100 per Day Online ebook to help them add income to their household. If you missed the earlier information about this simple, yet powerful product, take a look here.

Here’s another great resource from my “she-ro,” Carrie Wilkerson, the Barefoot Executive.  Learn to put your skills, free time and mindset to work for you. Grab a copy of “44 Unusual Ways” Moms are earning money in their spare time – and you can too.

And of course, in case you have not read it, my own book, “Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck” is guaranteed to empower you to change your financial situation forever. Take a look here.

Above all, refuse to participate in conversations about how “bad things are.” Yes, as I’ve written before, “ignore reality.”

Start looking for what is working in your life, however small it may seem. Since like attracts like, focus only on what you want and what is going right in your life and business.

Make this a family activity. Each night, make a list of  5 to 10 things you appreciate from your day. Doing this will quickly shift your energy to a point of attracting what you want and, before too long, you will start to see results. Don’t take my word for it. Do it and see for yourself.

Please share this with your friends and family and post your thoughts and comments below.

What do Self-help Books Have to do With Finding a Job?

Business guru Brian Tracy, once commented that whenever he interviewed a prospective employee, one of the first questions he would ask was, What’s the last self-help book you read? I’m guessing that the answer had a lot to do with how long the rest of the interview would last and the candidates chances of being hired.

With job losses mounting, this is a question worth considering. Why would anyone, especially a prospective employer, care what you read?

From where I sit, it’s quite simple. If you’re not interested in your own personal growth and professional development, are you really someone I want representing my company?

It’s a fact that virtually every successful person makes a habit out of reading and listening to personal development information. Years ago, audio program producer, Nightingale-Conant, conduced a survey of their customers and asked what value, in dollars, they would place on having listened to one of the company’s programs. The average was $180,000.

Years ago, as I wrote in my book Stop Living paycheck to Paycheck, my friend, John, increased his income 15% during one of the worst automotive slumps in history. The only thing he changed was he started reading self-help books for fifteen to twenty minutes each day before going to work.

Millionaire network marketers teach their people to read each day as a way to remain motivated. The people who are successful in that industry are the one’s who follow that advice.

Sadly, most people have not read a book since they left school and a third of the population has not been in a bookstore in years. In Korea in 2006, more money was spent on cigarettes than on books.

Joe Girard, the number one car salesman in the world, wrote a book, How to Sell Anything to Anybody about how he did it. It amazes me how few car salespeople I’ve meet who have read the book.

Personally, I watched as my life changed in direct proportion to what I was reading and listening to each day. To this day, if I start to feel, “less than great” it’s usually because I have not been keeping up my practice of ongoing personal development.

There are lots of great books published and more being released each week. Of course, I’d prefer you start with one of my books but it’s more important you read something that will nurture your spirit and help you maintain a positive outlook on life.

If you’d like to know more about the books I’ve written, you can start here

But, don’t stop there. Make this a part of your daily routine and you will learn, as I did, that it is one of the “secrets” to a happier, more successful life.

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer

As the legendary Nat King Cole sang way back in 1963, “Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.”

I don’t know about you but this time of year I like to slow down and relax a little. Of course, if you’re one of my friends in Australia, New Zealand or anywhere else that it’s winter, you’re having a different experience:-)

If you are, by the way, be sure to look for the new Australian edition of This is Your Life, Not a Dress Rehearsal just released there. You can order it from the Australian Online Bookshop

Also, you can read an interview with me in the new Australian success magazine, “No Limits.” It’s an awesome publication and I’m honored to be part of it.

But, if you are in the midst of summer, or just want to relax a bit, now is the ideal time to do it. In most of the world, people are slowing down a little.

Personally, one of the things I like to do, as Steven Covey suggests, is “sharpen my saw.” I like to use these slower times of the year to learn and study. Besides, I need something more to do while sitting on the beach or even on my own patio. If you’re interested, you can read below about some of what I’m currently reading and studying.

Summer is also a great time to do some strategic planning for your business or even make your plan to add an additional income stream.

As I’ve said over and over, I believe this is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from rising prices. You can learn several ways to do this in my home study program

Jim and Wayne brainstorming on the Oneida River
Georgia and I recently spent a few wonderful days visiting friends. Not only did we have fun and get to sit quietly along the Oneida river, watching the boats go by and, one afternoon taking a leisurely boat ride ourselves, I also had the opportunity to have long conversations with my friend Wayne. When he and I speak, we get into some pretty deep stuff.

One of these talks resulted in our brainstorming a new series of audio programs unlike anything ever done in the personal development field. The first of these will be ready in a few weeks and I’ll let you know more about it later.

Being away from my day-to-day environment enables me to free my mind from it’s usual tasks and allows my brain to come up with new and creative ideas. All while having a great time. Of course, I ate too much but I’ll deal with that later:-)

We all need this mental time to relax, reflect and let our minds come up with new ideas. This is hard to do if we’re in our regular routine.

So, the next time you’re thinking, “all I seem to do is work,” take some time off and as Nat King Cole suggested, enjoy those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.

Do you want to know what I am studying?

My latest book is The Answer by John Assaraf. You may remember him as the “Dream Board” guy from the movie, The Secret. It’s a law of attraction book targeted toward business people and it’s great.

To continue to “sharpen my saw” in business, I’m studying (and will be acting on for a while) “Traffic Manifesto” by my friend Ross Goldberg. If the Internet is a part of your business, or you’d like it to be, you need this.

However, be warned, if you think you’re going to fluff thorough it and are not willing to take the action, don’t bother. This is a very, very comprehensive course that will give you real results . . . if . . . you do your part.

Are you acting in alignment with what you want?

I read something in the book The Secret, that like many of the ideas in the book, is quite profound.

By the way if you don’t have a copy of this powerful book, I suggest you get one. Better yet, get the book and the movie and maybe even the audio.

If you’ve read any of my books, the ideas from the secret will seem familiar to you. However, it’s a beautifully written book with powerful ideas and suggestions from some of the top people in the personal development field.

The line that struck me was “When you want to attract something, make sure your actions do not contradict what you are asking for.” This is one of those ideas that, on the surface seem obvious but, when explored deeper, are quite profound.

How many of us experience a desire and then act “out of alignment” with what we say that we want?

For example, are you one of those people who, while you want more money, says things like, “I can’t afford that!” Saying things that are not in alignment with what you desire will prevent your good from coming to you.

Remember we attract what we think about and speak about. If you go through life looking at things that you like and are saying “I can’t afford that.” You never will.

Do you desire health but look in the mirror everyday and notice how overweight you are? Again, you can not attract what you want by noticing what you do not want. The more you notice your being overweight, the harder it will be to lose the weight and become healthier.

Instead, when you look in the mirror, notice those things that you do like about yourself and are proud of. Start affirming that you are becoming more and more fit each day. Start seeing yourself at your ideal weight.

Do you want a loving, passionate relationship but spend your days noticing all the things about your partner that bother you? As the line in the TV commercial once said, “You can’t get there from here.” Start noticing what you do like and appreciate about your loved one and watch your relationship change.

Remember the law of attraction is always working in your life and does not judge. If you say you want one thing, but then behave in a manner that is out of alignment with that, you’re consistent behavior and what you steadily tell yourself and are “expecting” will be the dominant vibration. And this vibration that will resonate with and attract a similar vibration.

Your job is to keep your dominant vibration, your point of focus, on what you want. The more you do this, the more you will see your vision taking hold and the more your life will change for the better.

A key principal here is to keep reaching for the thought that feels better. Spend more time thinking about and affirming what you do want and less time (or no time at all) focused on what you don’t want or don’t yet have. Your vision will manifest. Just hold true to your desires.

If it’s more money you want, take advantage of my name your price offer for the ebook edition of my new book – Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck
