Archives For Visions & Goals

It’s that time of year again when many of us look back over the past year – seeing the weight we didn’t lose, money we didn’t earn, and relationship we didn’t develop and, once again feel the pain of not having made the changes we were so hopeful for at the start of this year.

Why New Years Resolutions Are Doomed to Fail

We resolve, with the promise of a new beginning that tells us, “Next year will be different,” we set about making grand plans and resolutions for the year ahead, knowing in our hearts we will most likely abandon them before the end of the first month of the new year.

What is it that sabotages our noble intentions and what can we do about it?

First, decide what it is you truly want. Not what someone thinks you should want but what you actually want. Take time to think about what really matters to you.

Next, write it down in the form of an affirmative goal. “I am happily reaching my ideal weight of 125 pounds,” for example. Writing a goal in itself can have a powerful effect on it’s accomplishment.

Next, write down why you want it. This important step, overlooked by many, is a key to achieving what you want for your life. The bigger your “why,” the more motivated you will be to stick to your plan.

Then, write how you will feel when you have this. Imagine yourself being the person you want to become. How does this feel? Now, do the opposite. Write down everything you’re missing out on by not having done this. Get honest. What will another year of financial pressure do to you and your family.

These two steps of identifying how achieving your goals will make you feel and what you’re missing out on by not having done so, will give you the leverage you’ll need to push through the inertia that stops most people.

Lastly, ask yourself what one simple step you can take, right now, that will move you toward your desires and do it. This confirms to your subconscious mind that you are serious about making changes and sets your goal into motion.

As Thoreau taught us, “If one advances confidently in the direction of his (or her) dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.”

You’re never too old

You’re never too old

Often in seminars, someone will say to me, “I’m too old to change” or “I’m too old to follow my dreams.” This is pure nonsense. As long as you have a pulse, you can move toward realizing your dreams.

Wally Amos

Of course, there are some exceptions. If you’re 75 and want to be a professional baseball player, this is not likely to happen, however, there are lots of other dreams you can fulfill regardless of your age.

I’ve always enjoyed the story about the woman who told author and speaker, Wally Amos (of Famous Amos cookie fame), that at 54, if she were to go to law school, in three years when she graduated, she would be 57. Wally asked her how old she would be in three years if she did not go to law school?

I remember a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer about a man who had worked in a dry cleaning store for twenty one years without missing a day of work. What made the story unique was that the man was eighty one years old when he was hired!

The man, 103 years old when the story was published, was still going strong.

What are some of your dreams?

  • What is it that you would like to have in your life?
  • What would you like to do?
  • Where would you like to go?
  • Who would you like to meet?
  • What would you like to be known for?
  • What would you like to leave as your legacy?

I recently received an email from a man in Africa, asking for my advice on how he can change his life.

In thinking about his situation I realized that, no matter where you are – Africa, New York, London, Tokyo, or anywhere else, it’s the same process.

You can’t keep telling the same story and expect conditions to change. If you want to improve conditions in your life, you must begin telling yourself a new story.

The most important thing you can do is stop talking about the problems.

Yes, conditions are difficult in many parts of the world however continuing to talk about them and feeling victimized does nothing more than give energy to the problem.

Whether you’re trying to earn enough to feed your family, start your business or, as is the case in the United States government, create jobs, the law of attraction is always at work.

No matter who’s in office, if they continue to focus on the problem, they will continue to perpetuate the condition. This is one of the reason governments everywhere in the world are ineffective in changing conditions.

All teachings teach something similar to the Bible statement that, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

We attract what we think about. Period. It’s non negotiable.

You cannot keep saying things like, “I don’t want to be struggling all the time” and expect it to magically change.

We must all learn to change the conversation from what we do not want to what we do. You must begin writing a new story about your life, literally. Start talking to yourself about how your life is getting better and better each day.

Learn to focus your attention on what it is you do have, what you are thankful for- however little that may be- and what is going right in your life.

Spend some time each day, in your mind, seeing the life you want to be living. Feel it with all your senses.

If it’s a job you want, begin by imagining yourself working in your ideal career, enjoying your work and feeling appreciated. Of course, don’t stop there. We have an active role to play in our lives so, after you invest time seeing the life you want, get up and do something to move toward it, however small it may seem at the moment.

If you want to start or grow a business, instead of looking at obstacles, however true they may seem, start looking for ways you can provide service.

When you find ways to serve: your community, your fellow man, and the world at large, you will begin to see ways in which you can earn money.

It’s never the other way around.

I know of no one who is successful who began by looking for ways to make money. Financial abundance is always the result of doing something that provides value in the world.

Begin now writing the story of your new life. Write it down, act it out, see it, feel it and start moving toward it.

As the title of one of my books reminds us, “This is Your Life, Not a Dress rehearsal.”

Treasure Maps – Dream Boards – Vision Boards

Whatever you call them,  they do the trick.

Your Creation Box

Another variation similar to a treasure map is something called a creation box. To use this idea, simply obtain a box of whatever size you feel is appropriate. As you read through newspapers, magazines and catalogues, notice the pictures of the things that you would like to attract into your own life. They may be material things, like cameras, DVD’s computers, automobiles, new furniture, or they can be emotional states like joy, peace and serenity.

When you see a picture, particularly something that you would like to have, a place you would like to visit or an emotional state that you would like to experience, cut it out and, after looking at it closely, place it in your creation box. You can even write on slips of paper things that you want to have or emotional states that you would like to experience more regularly.

As with the treasure map you are once again teaching your conscious and subconscious mind what you would like to have or experience in your life. You are, in effect, actively creating your life as you live it.

From time to time you can revisit your creation box to reinforce these ideas. I have found, over time, that when I go back to look at my creation box, I already have many of its contents in my life. It is as if by magic!
