Why New Year’s Resolutions Are Doomed
to
Fail and How to Fix It

Best Selling Author Jim Donovan Shares a Simple Plan

Doylestown, PA – January 1, 2013 – It’s that time of year again when many people look back over the past year- seeing the weight they didn’t lose, money they didn’t earn, and relationship they didn’t develop. Once again, they feel the pain of not having made the changes they were so hopeful for at the start of this year.

What is it that sabotages their intentions and what can they do about it?

52 Ways to a Happier Life, Mystic, CT

Success and happiness guru, Jim Donovan says, “First, they must decide what it is they truly want. Not what someone thinks they should want but what they actually want. Take time to think about what really matters to them.”

Donovan, who has also been called “The original feel good guy” suggests these simple steps to increase the likelihood of success in the year ahead:

1. Write down what they truly want in the form of an affirmative goal. For example, “I am happily reaching my ideal weight of 125 pounds.,” Writing a goal in itself can have a powerful effect on its accomplishment.

2. Write down why they want it. This important step, overlooked by many, is a key to achieving what they want for their life. The bigger the “why,” the more motivated individuals will be to stick to their plan.

3. Write how it will feel to have this. Imagine being the person they want to become. How does this feel?

4. Write down the opposite, everything they are missing out on by not having done this. These two steps of identifying how achieving their goals will make them feel and what they’re missing out on by not having done so, will give them the leverage they’ll need to push through the inertia that stops most people.

5. Lastly, decide what one simple step they can take, right now, to move toward their desires and do it. This confirms to their subconscious mind that they are serious about making changes and sets their goal into motion.

Decades ago when I was living in Boston, MA, I had he pleasure of having the Gillette Corporation as one of our clients in our marketing communications services business.

Gillette razorDuring that time, they were best known as a leader in razor blades and lighters and, in business circles, as having developed what is, to this day, a great marketing strategy – “Give the customer the product (razor) and sell them the supplies (blades). The computer printer industry, as we all know, copied that idea all the way to the bank.

This was also a time when the audio cassette tape was coming into its own, largely as a result of the work of Thomas Dolby and his noise suppression system that eliminated the hissing sound inherent in audio cassette recordings.

Big businesses jumped on this, seeing it as the powerful communications tool it was, especially with a global sales force and it established a need for the services we were offering.

This was, for me, an amazing experience and my entry into the world of the entrepreneur. At a young age, there I was sitting with leaders of business working side by side, learning from them and helping them solve problems. Funny, but that’s pretty much what I do today.

Gillette, like several leading companies, were beginning to use media as a communications tool. Since I had been in broadcast television, video and audio production was a big part of our business back then.

We would produce company information about sales, management, training, and marketing using whatever media fit the job, and distribute that to the field.

This was the beginning of what we know today as “Podcasting” and “Youtube.”

The National Sales Manager at Gillette at the time, Jack Falvey, understood the value of training and development and had built a library of personal development, self-help and business titles and made them available on a lending basis to the sales people in the field.

To encourage the sales people to work on their own personal development while in the field, Gillette equipped their salesforce of some 600 reps with a company car with an audio cassette player installed.

I believe that one of the contributing factors to Gillette’s enormous success during that period was a result of the field sales force listening to the recordings, attending seminars and, overall, being encouraged to work on their own skills and personal development.

It doesn’t take a double blind study to conclude that listening to and reading positive, uplifting personal growth material will help a person to feel more positive, be more motivated, feel better about themselves and, as a result, become more productive.

Study after study has concluded that investments in training and development can be seen on the bottom line.

One would wonder why, then, more companies do not have even something as simple as a “book of the month” club. Of course, many do. Interestingly enough, these tend to be the more successful companies.

Any size business can benefit from investing in their people with ongoing training and development in a variety of areas, especially personal development and life skills.

You’ll find that many trainers and speakers, like myself, offer special pricing in their local markets.

Another inexpensive way to keep your people performing at their peak, is to institute a “Book-of-the-month” club. My friend and publisher, Tracey Jones at Tremendous Life Books, can create a suggested reading book program for companies of any size.

This simple, inexpensive addition to your employee development will pay for itself many times over.

If you’d like to start with one of my books, 52 Ways to a Happier Life, is an ideal choice with its short, two page, chapters. Contact me and I’ll be pleased to assist you.

Particularly for the small to mid sized business, an investment in your managers and sales people will payoff quickly in increased performance and, as a result, more business.

52 Ways to a Happier Life – $14.95

Practical ideas you can use to create the life you were born to live.

If we truly want to live a happier and more fulfilling life, it is up to us to design it and not leave it to chance. I first heard this back when I was in the process of rebuilding my own life after having hit rock bottom, losing everything.

What I learned was that if I took control over my own thoughts, developed a more positive attitude more of the time, set goals for what I wanted my life to become, and took action, I would be happier and my life would get better, and better. It did and continues to do so today.

During this time one of the keys to success I learned was to invest just 5 to 10 minutes a day to reading self-help literature. This ensured that I would begin each day on a positive note and, as an object in motion tends to stay in motion, my attitude would typically remain positive throughout the day.

What about you?

Do you find that even though you’ve read a lot of self growth and positive attitude books you still have days when you’re just not happy? I know I do unless I invest that 5 to 10 minutes a day reading. All of the experts agree that the fist hour or so after awakening is one of your most powerful periods.

(or how attract a new car)

The idea of making vision or dream boards or, as I was taught some 30 years ago, Treasure Maps, to attract what you want has recently gained new and greater popularity, mainly as the result of the movie and book, The Secret.

The idea, however, is not new. Catherine Ponder wrote about them in her book, The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity in the early 1960′s and Shakti Gwain brought the idea back into popularity in 1975 in her classic self-help book,  Creative Visualization. They both referred to the idea as a “Treasure Map,” which is what I was taught some thirty years ago, while living in Marin County California.

I was looking at a collage on the wall while visiting a friend’s new apartment. I asked her what this was and she replied, “Oh, that’s my treasure map.” She went on to explain the idea to me. A chill went down my spine when I looked out the window and realized that the amazing view of San Francisco harbor and the Golden Gate bridge, along with the apartment I was standing in, was almost an exact match to the picture on the wall.

It didn’t take much more to convince me that this was a great tool for manifesting.

Regardless of where you learn this idea or what you call it, the concept of making a visual representation of what you desire is a powerful aid in creating the life you want.

Whether it’s something as simple as manifesting a new car, as you’ll see below, a special vacation, career, relationship or an entire lifestyle, Vision Boards are something I strongly suggest you add to your “Success Toolbox.”

Writing your goals, reciting affirmations, visualizing your desires, and using a visual collage of what you want are all powerful aids that will speed your progress and contribute to your creating the life you were born to live.

Perhaps one of the simplest uses of a vision board, and one most people can relate to, is in attracting a new car. I use this reference in my books and seminars not so much because I’m hung-up on cars, but because it’s a concrete material example of how to use the principle.

The photo on the left is a car my wife, Georgia, wanted. As I teach in my goal setting programs, she had become clear as to the make, model, and color. In her case, the color would prove to be the greatest obstacle to overcome.

Georgia wanted a Jaguar in Racing Green. Since the color has been discontinued and it’s the one most people identify with the Jaguar brand, they are becoming rare.

Following the steps to attracting what she wanted, Georgia found a photo of the car and placed it next to her makeup mirror.

Each day, as she was putting on her makeup, she’d see the image of her dream car. At the same time, we had set up an Internet search for the car.

She would visualize driving her new car while, at the same time, being grateful for the car she already had. This is an important point. Always give thanks for what you have. The Bible statement, “To he who has, more is given,” implies being grateful for what you already have.

Does it really work?

You decide. The photo below was taken in our driveway. In it are Georgia and her new green car, after just a few short months of her setting the goal and making her vision board.

What do you want?

Start collecting pictures that represent what you want to attract into your life. Be sure to include a photo of you or your family in your vision. Put it somewhere you will see it regularly and affirm your good is on it’s way to you.

Allow it. Allowing means not doubting, not pushing it away. If you’re praying for rain, carry an umbrella.

By the way, if you want to really learn specifically how to attract a new car, the “master” of cars Joe Vitale, did an entire program about it. Here’s my affiliate link to it.
