Of all the positive emotion we can experience, the one that produces the highest vibration, according the the scientists who measure these things, is gratitude. It’s not joy, passion, or even love but gratitude that evokes our highest and most pure vibrational state.

This may be because heartfelt gratitude honors our Creator and, as a result, causes us to feel the other positive emotions.

What better day than the US celebration of Thanksgiving, to reflect on this.

thanksgiving cat

On this day, it is a practice around our house, as it is for many people, to take time to reflect on those things we are grateful for in our lives. Actually, for Georgia and I, it is a regular practice. Over time, we have realized that by taking the time to express what we are grateful for each day, more good has come into our lives.

It’s a law – the law of attraction – that what we hold our attention on is attracted to us, therefore, it stands to reason that focusing on what we are grateful for in our lives will attract more of the same, namely that which to be grateful for.

Doing this does not need to be a long, drawn out process. Listing four or five things you are grateful for each day will hold you in this energy of appreciation which will activate the law and begin attracting to you more of that which you desire.

But . . . what if you don’t feel particularly thankful right now?

What if, like so many people, you’re having a difficult time and are feeling a bit of self pity?

Now, along comes Thanksgiving with all of its added pressures and family obligations and you’re faced with all those “grateful” people telling you to count your blessings.

“Bah, humbug!” you say, “if you felt like I do, you wouldn’t be so darned smiley.”

So just how can you change how you feel even when you’re feeling down and would rather just sit and have a pity party?

Let’s face it, we’ve all been there at one time or another and will probably be there again. We’ve all experienced times when we just did not feel very thankful. I know I have. We have all experienced times when life just seems to have singled us out for problems. What do we do then?

The fastest and most effective way I know to change how you’re feeling about yourself is to get out of yourself. Get out of your own problems and concerns. Go out and do something for someone else. I guarantee you will feel better after doing this.

You could do anything from volunteering to help feed the homeless at a soup kitchen, delivering a bag of groceries to someone in need, donating some of your unwanted, good condition, clothing, visiting someone in a hospital or nursing home, or any number of things that will enable you to step out of yourself long enough for your perspective to change. You’ll be amazed how much your “problems” have changed when you’re finished.

Following are a couple of other things you can do to make this a happier, more enjoyable holiday season:

Write a list of everything that is good in your life
What’s working? What are you grateful for? Be sure to list every little thing you can think of, the more the better. It’s a fact that a person cannot feel gratitude and be in self pity at the same time.

Refuse to take part in gossip
Gossip serves no one. Remember what you give out comes back. Besides who do you think the gossips are talking about when you’re not there? If you want to be happier and more at peace, choose not to partake. A great suggestion for many family gatherings. By the way, look for more about this topic in my next post.

Relax and enjoy your holiday
Contrary to what retailers would like you to believe, there’s still lots of time to shop before Christmas. You don’t have to rush to the stores at 2:00 am the day after Thanksgiving just because some companies choose to open at that time.

When I was in the early stages of putting my life back together after having hit my personal bottom, one of the programs that had a huge impact on me, and the catalyst for what has become my life’s work, was an audio by Dr. Dennis Waitely titled, “The Psychology of Winning.”

Jim DonovanOn one of the cassettes, Dr. Waitely talked about positive self image and, in one segment, taught me that a key to having a better image of yourself was to “Dress and look your best at all times.”

It’s may seem obvious, simple even, however it can have a profound effect on your self image and the way in which you project yourself to the outside world.

While people have said, “the clothes do not make the woman” (or man) and “you don’t judge a book by its cover,” in practice the opposite is usually true. We typically judge people by their appearance. And, as anyone in the book industry will tell you, book covers are the most important consideration when publishing a book.

It may seem pretty superficial to judge someone by their appearance, however, it’s what we do, consciously or unconsciously. First impressions are important and the first thing someone will notice about you is how you look. It’s human nature. It has been said that we form an opinion about a person in the first thirty seconds after meeting them. This is why it is so important, especially at work, to look and dress your best at all times.

In the early days of the movie industry, when the big Hollywood studios were in control of the industry, actors and actresses were never seen in public without being fully groomed and styled. It’s was not a coincidence. Studios invested large sums of money making sure their actors were always seen in the best possible light.

If you want to be happier and more successful in your career, make sure you always look your best. Wear stylish clothes that fit properly and complement your natural appearance and, of course, are appropriate for your job. Pay attention to your personal appearance, making sure your hair is neat and clean. Women need to be ensure that your makeup is appropriate for a work environment.

Years ago we hired a local home improvement contractor to do some work in our home. While this is an industry with the most consumer complaints and overrun with unreliable people who arrive in broken down trucks, looking like homeless people, the person we hired was the exception. The contractor, Tom, arrived in a clean, detailed van and was dressed in a clean, smartly pressed uniform with is company’s logo embroidered on the shirt pocket.

Just his appearance made us feel comfortable and communicated the image of a confident, successful professional. Over the years, Tom helped us with several projects and became someone I would refer to others without hesitation.

If you work in an office or are in sales, invest in a good quality wardrobe. If you want to do this on a budget, shop the outlet stores or even high end consignment shops. In my book, “Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck,” I told the story of the insurance salesman who would buy designer suits in a consignment store, wear them a couple of times, and then resell them on eBay. Doing this enabled him to dress quite expensively without spending a fortune and had the added effect of impressing his clients. It is a fact that people like to do business with successful people.

Here’s a tip from my wife, Georgia. If you want to rise up in an organization, look at how you bosses boss dresses and model that.

Always remember what movie mogul, Darryl Zanuck said, “never make a deal with a man in a cheap suit.”

Handbook to a Happier Life

This is the new, updated, 175 page edition published by New World Library. This was Jim’s first, self-published, book and it now has twice the information and is better than ever.

“Handbook to a Happier Life is great! It is brief, easy to read, practical, and filled with useful exercises for making positive changes. This little book should be part of everyone’s self-help library.” – Jack Canfield, co-author, Chicken Soup for the Soul
“Handbook to a Happier Life is delicious and delightful! Jim has taken the best ‘ingredients’ of life and shows us how we can combine them into just the recipe we need to help us create a fulfilling life.” – Wally Amos, author, The Cookie Never Crumbles.

He then began giving seminars on “how to change your life” based on the simple yet effective ideas that had worked for him in his recovery. Don’t make big changes, Donovan suggests, just start slowly and move bit-by-bit toward your goal. In addition to goal-setting and goal-keeping, Donovan discusses writing personal affirmations that work, cultivating gratitude, disciplining the mind, and helping others to achieve their dreams. These easy-to-grasp concepts have helped thousands of people turn their lives around.

To say 2010 was a year of challenges is a grand understatement. We’ve seen the world economy go from bad to worse, watched as political “leaders” bickered over endless self-serving issues at the expense of the voting public, saw giant companies, both here in the U.S. and elsewhere, experience some of their worst years in history.

If you’re fortunate enough to have come through all this intact, congratulations. You can tell your children and grandchildren you lived through some of the most difficult times in history.

If you have, as so many, been beaten down, don’t give up now. Things will get better; they always do

Personally, when I’m facing any challenge I go back to the simple wisdom of the Serenity Prayer.

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, wisdom to know the difference.”

Contained within this simple little prayer is the key to facing any challenge.

I can’t change what happens in Washington. I can, however, change my own life. I can, as I have done, stop reading newspapers and watching TV news. I can stop being part of the “what’s wrong with everything” conversation and I can stop thinking, as Chicken Little said, “the sky is falling.” It’s not.

I can apply what I know and use the tools and techniques I write about here, to change my focus. I can list what I appreciate in my life and what I’m grateful for. I can write what’s working in my life, what’s going right, and I can put my attention on what I can change and control.

capri ItalyI can, as I will explore in detail in a forthcoming CD, look at the opportunities, not the problems. Opportunities are, and always have been, everywhere. It’s all a matter of focus and perception.

What are you looking at?

Are you part of the “Let’s talk about how bad things are” crowd? Do you lament about the poor economy and sit nodding your head in agreement as the bobble-headed television news pundits continue to broadcast only the worst stories of the day?

Or are you “minding your own business” and seeking ways in which you can improve your own economy? I’m guessing that the fact you’re reading this puts you in the latter group.

Whatever problems or challenges you are facing, there’s always something you can do. It really is as simple as having the “courage to change the things you can.” Stop worrying about those things, most things, that are out of your control.

I cannot, as much as I may want, end the recession. I can, however, do what I can to help myself, my family, and my community. I can explore ways to increase my income, circulate what I can in my local economy, and tithe a percentage to worthy causes.

By the way, if you want to learn ways to increase your own income, read my book, “Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck” or get the 8 part audio home study course.

When it comes to the economy, the operative phrase is “cash flow.” Currency must be flowing throughout our society. The word “currency” itself signifies circulation.

Part of what’s contributing to the present economic slow down are the individuals and businesses, particularly the banks, who are sitting on their assets, afraid to make a move.

Refuse to be a part of that crowd. Instead, follow the sage advice of Henry David Thoreau who said,

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

Continue to write your daily “appreciation list” and be on the lookout for opportunities to improve your personal economy. Explore your options. See your dream life unfolding before you and, before you know it, you will be living a life beyond anything you could have expected.

If you’re really ready to start creating the life you were born to live, check out my home study audio course.
