We have nothing to fear, but fear itself!

The quotation above, part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1933 inaugural address responding to the conditions of the day, is said to have been written by Napoleon Hill, author of “Think and Grow Rich.” Incidentally, Hill was part of President Roosevelt’s “National Recovery Administration,” formed to help inspire public confidence during the great depression. Perhaps our new Administration could learn from this and institute a similar plan.

To say people are feeling fearful right now is a huge understatement. Freaked out would be more accurate and no wonder. All we get from the news media is gloom and doom. We’re bombarded daily with news of layoffs, some from even the most stable companies, mortgage foreclosures, banking failures and more.

The important thing to realize is that, unless you are one of those people directly affected by a layoff or a foreclosure, you do not have to identify with the problem.

The old adage about fear being “false evidence appearing real” is important to remember. If you are not directly affected by what is happening, and most of us are not, it really is false evidence. I’ll agree that we are all affected by this economy to some extent, but we can choose how we react to it. We can always choose how we react in any situation.

A Course, in Miracles teaches that nothing has any meaning other than that which we give it.

Regardless of what is happening there are always people who are succeeding. Instead of being part of the group that is constantly talking about problems, a total waste of time, you can choose to look for solutions.

What is essential, however, regardless of what is happening in your life, is that you don’t get into a state of being fearful.

The very energy of fear, the negative of it, will cut off your access to possible solutions. Science teaches us that your very ability to tap into resourceful brain states is limited when you are in a fearful state.

How to reduce or eliminate fear

One of the keys to lessening any fears you may have is to focus on the present moment. In the present everything is, most likely, just fine. Only when we project some imagined disaster in the future, do we even experience feelings of fear.

We taunt ourselves with “what if” statements like “What if I lose my job?” “What if I get sick and can’t work?” and on and on until we’re gripped by the fear of what “could” happen. Wake up! It’s not happening now. You’re okay and chances are you’ll continue to be okay.

One simple way to bring your attention into the present moment is to practice a simple centering exercise. This can be done whenever you’re feeling anxious and need not take more than a minute or two.

Do not do this, or any mind quieting exercise while driving. Do not strain and if you become dizzy, stop immediately. If you have respiratory problems, check with your medical practitioner before attempting this.

Sit quietly, feet planted firmly on the floor. Take a few deep breadths, breathing in slowly through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Sit for moment, observing your breadth flowing in and out of your body. During this time, let go of everything you’re concerned with and simply focus on your breathing. You will begin to feel relaxed almost immediately.

Watch where you’re putting your attention

Change your focus away from problems by making a list of everything that is working in your life. Doing this will shift your vibrational energy to what is going right which will, in turn, attract more of the same.

Another variation on this is to make a gratitude or appreciation list of everything you appreciate in your life. Focusing on this will also shift your energy away from problems toward solutions.

If possible maintain a support group. This could be made up of family and friends, colleagues, your coach, or even a formalized group. To learn more about the types of groups meeting near you, check out www.Meetup.com
