What would you do if your job disappeared tomorrow?

In the uncertain world we’re living in this is a real possibility for most people. I’m not trying to be a downer but an unexpected job loss can devastate many families.

In my view you have two choices. You can spend your days becoming more and more stressed, worrying about your future, doing whatever you’re told, no matter how absurd or illegal, living in fear of losing your livelihood, or . . .

You can decide to do something proactive to buffer yourself and your family financially.

Gig economy and side hustles

In the world of commerce today we have more opportunity than ever before in history.

I’ve always been a proponent of owning a business of your own, regardless of your job. I wrote the book Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck in 2007 to help people earn more money without quitting their job.

That book is currently out of print while being updated, however, the original edition, filled with simple income earning ideas and different ways to relate to and think about money is available free from the link below.

The reason I’m updating the Paycheck book is to include some of the new ways we now have to earn extra income that were not available even just ten years ago.

Think about that. These income opportunities did not, for the most part, exist just a short decade ago.

Today we have the “Gig Economy,” encompassing services from Fiverr.com and Upwork.com to Uber.com and Lyft.com and a host of others who, essentially provide people the opportunity to earn income by completing specific “gigs.”

For example Fiverr.com, a service I like and use frequently to buy various services, also provides a platform for people to sell their skills and services in increments of $5. Hence the name.

I’ve ordered a variety of gigs on Fiverr, ranging from simple images, ebook covers, and translations, to transcriptions and other business services.

I’ve even used it for fun things like buying my wife a Cactus named after her, certificate and all, to having someone sing happy birthday to her in the voice of Kermit the Frog.

Whether you opt for being part of the gig economy, join a network marketing company, or simply start your own business, please do something to buffer your financial well being.

The biggest reason for doing this, in addition to having more money, is that you gain peace of mind having multiple income streams from a “side hustle.”

In future posts I’m planning on sharing more about ways you can protect yourself financially and add streams of income to your life.
