The majority of people in our society, for whatever reason, feel a need to blame someone or something for the conditions in their life.
They point to the government, their company, their parents, spouse, lack of education, environment, or any number of other “reasons” for their situation.
When an undesirable event occurs in their life, they’re quick to point to some outside cause. If only “they would do something about this, I’d be fine” and similar sentiments become the conditioned response.
While on the surface, this may seem reasonable and of little consequence, in reality it is one of the most detrimental things that you can do.
The reason is quite simple; it takes away your power.
If you study successful people from all walks of life, you’ll find that one of the traits that we all share is our willingness to take responsibility for every event in our life. No matter what happens, or the seeming cause of the situation, we’re willing to own it.
Why would you take responsibility for everything in your life?
The answer again is simple; because you then have the power to do something about it.
For example, if I’m experiencing financial hardship because of something the government is or is not doing, I’m stuck until they change. Pretty unlikely.
However, if I am willing to accept responsibility for my life, I can do something to change my situation.
Another reason to accept responsibility for your life is because no matter who or what caused a particular condition, you are fully accountable. Even if your company created your present circumstance, it’s your life that is being affected by it. Therefore, you are accountable, like it or not.
Whatever is going on in your life, as soon as you are willing to say “I am responsible,” you are empowered to change your condition.
If you choose to remain a victim, you’re stuck right where you are.
